February 2012 GOOD CITIZENS

The month of February is coming to a close, but not before we have celebrated our Good Citizens of the Month at the HARD WORK CAFE!
As the principal, I am always happy to dine with students. They tell me what is happening in their lives, give great ideas, and lift my spirits.
Representing k-3rd grade: Kamryn C., Emily G., Lauryn J., Noah M.,

Yes, you read it right... Our school hosted the wedding of Q and U! Each year, our kindergarten students celebrate Valentine's Day by attending the blessed union of two special letters of the alphabet. Missing a Coat?

Is your child missing a coat or jacket?
There are many nice items of clothing in the lost and found located in the main building upstairs on the right side landing. Please ask your child to check or feel free to visit the school and browse yourself.

**Please note, after the school year ends, all lost items will be donated to charity. I would much rather our students claim their clothing! HELP...

R. L. Young Student's Photography Displayed in Montgomery

Sometimes being absent from school can be a whole new way of learning. Briana and her wonderful parents took a trip to Montgomery on Wednesday to view her winning photography as it was displayed for the State Superintendent's Art Show. Briana won category II for the District and was first place at the school level. We are proud of her and I am happy to share this wonderful write up about her trip.

REPORT CARDS TODAY FEB. 23

Alert, news flash! Your child has a report card coming home TODAY. Find something positive to say AND help your child find something that needs improvement. PRAISE makes a big difference. The new six weeks has already begun!

p.s. If your child's report is not satisfactory, consider the following items:
*Is your child frequently tardy?
*Does your child complete homework?
*Does your child and you study for tests?
*Does your child know school is important to you, too?
*Does your child bring the necessary supplies to class?
*Do you visit the school for an occasional lunch date or to speak to the teacher?
*Is your child frequently absent from school, but could have probably attended?

The problem may not be his/her ability to learn, but obstacles that can be easily removed.

So today our school decided to let the Maintenance Crew know just how much they mean to us. I can't share them all, but I did want to reveal a few of their writings!

2-3-12 PE Star Student of the Week!

This week's star student works hard at everything she does. She is a true friend. She always treats everyone equally. She demonstrates great leadership qualities to her classmates. She always has a big smile on her face and she also has a kind heart. Great job Hannah J. for being this week's brightest shining star!

Hands On Learning Vs the Textbook

The teaching of children has evolved from the methods of the past. Students today want to take an active part when inquiring new information. Teachers at R. L. Young are accommodating this type of learning by planning activities that allow students to do more than "sit and get".
Check out these pictures taken from a science lesson in Mrs. French's 5th grade class. They are learning about phases of the moon. Sure they are using a textbook, but not as the primary learning tool. The text is being used as a resource to literately recreate the moon's phases using COOKIES.
They giggled, licked their fingers, and totally enjoyed learning the difference between waxing and waning, quarter moon and new moon, and how the sun determines what fraction of the moon is visible to those on Earth.
There was conversations about the moon, labeling phases on plates, and experiencing deeper learning. Of course, this lesson would not have been complete without what goes best with cookies....MILK!
Will these students remember more about the phases of the moon? Probably so because they have a stronger point of reference from this lesson.
Check out Jessie's smile and finished product. Awesome!
Thanks, Mrs. French for inviting me into your classroom AND going the extra mile to make learning fun!

We LOVE Animals!

R. L. Young students and adults have a soft spot when it comes to the furry and fuzzy animals, especially those who are homeless or lost. Talladega Control in Talladega works hard to help these unwanted animals and our school wants to pitch in!

Your child received a letter this week encouraging families to donate the following items:
  • Cleaning supplies (dishwashing liquid, Pinesol, bleach)
  • Blankets or pet beds
  • Animal toys or treats
  • cat litter
  • cat food
  • dog food
Payton M. takes a look at the child-decorated box located in the main
     building ready to receive donations.
Talladega Animal Control Department will be visiting our campus on Feb. 27th to collect the items and share some tips on how to care for a pet. Thank you, parents, in advance for considering this a worthwhile project to support.

The fuzzies and furries at the shelter appreciate it, too!
