2013 Logo Winners Announced!

The artistic talent at R. L. Young is astonishing! The faculty and staff had a difficult time narrowing down the top three drawings. We are proud to announce the following:

Malorie B., a fourth grader in Mrs. Lamberth's class, had the winning entry. Her artwork (below) will be displayed on the 2013-14 school t-shirts! The design must illustrate the school's long time motto: R. L. Young...a good place to learn and grow

Way to go, Malorie!

Second place winner Shayla C. and third place winner Kelvin H. join Malorie for a photograph.

Congratulations to all who rolled up their sleeves and entered the contest. We appreciate the effort and loved all of the drawings!

CAREER DAY at R L YOUNG, April 26

Career day at school offers students the opportunity to experience the different jobs available to them and aids them in discovering what type of job they want in life. Our career day at R. L. Young is this FRIDAY, APRIL 26! Please note that students are invited to dress up in their career choice!

We will hold a Career Day assembly from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Special guests have been invited and will be sharing a little about the career choice they chose and what they do on a typical day. After the presentations, our students will participate in a parade so that everyone can see their career choices.

She's a Special Lady!

The looks of admiration are apparent in this photo of second graders. We all feel blessed to have such a wonderful bookkeeper and secretary at R. L. Young, Mrs. Linda Hodnett. She is a special lady who graciously meets the public, addresses the needs of the students and teachers, and takes extra good care of the principal. She also manages the financial books and assists PTO with all of their many projects. We are lucky to have such a fine lady to help us all year long.

Thanks for all that you do, Mrs. Hodnett...
HAPPY SECRETARY'S DAY!

AR Trophy...They did it AGAIN!

Small and powerful, Mrs. Brooks' first graders held tight to the AR Highest Comprehension % Trophy for a second week with a 96.3. WOW! They are also the only class that had all students take at least one test this week.
Participation in the AR program allows individual readers a chance to read a book on their level and test their understanding of the book. The children choose their own books according to their interest in various topics. They have a comfort book level range to help guide them to books that are not "too easy or too hard".

As principal, I encourage you to ask your child about their AR %, the number of points earned, and what they are reading now. Even better, ask your child to read to you!

ONLY 2 WEEKS REMAIN FOR AR POINTS AND PRIZES. April 25 will end the prize window for this year, although the library will remain open until May 10.
Happy Reading!

Zora Ellis Junior High visits R. L. Young

It is always a happy time when we have visits from Zora Ellis Junior High students, especially when they are former R.L. Youngers! Recently, Mrs. Gloria Thomas, Assistant Principal of Zora Ellis accompanied many fine representatives of the various programs and activities offered at the school. From sports such as archery and baseball, to band, drama, cheerleading, and Beta Club the students were excited to share what is happening at ZEJH! These extracurricular activities enrich their school and the lives of these students.

Under the guidance of third grade teacher Cathy Thornton, R. L. Youngers did it again! They successfully raised $1,024 dollars for the St. Jude Children's Hospital. Each participant completed a math workbook and collected donations for the hospital. This is a yearly event for our
students and we appreciate the wonderful support of this worthy cause
