Our students are in the collection business...the card collecting business, that is! For 18 weeks, students with no tardies, checkouts, or absences received an animal card from India and Africa. This nine weeks they are earning cards from Australia.

What's even more fun is drawing out names for the cool stuffed animals. Kyleigh B. was the lucky winner for last week. But when students come to school, they are all winners!

I discovered a cool site for parents who want to help their child(ren) learn more about managing money at an early age. Check out kidworth here.

From the site:

Kidworth is about using a kid’s income (from gifts, allowance and earnings) in productive ways.

Parents register a free account and set goals with kids (or for kids, depending upon their age) and share those goals with the people in their kid’s life. (Kidworth has tools to help with sharing).

When events occur where the kid would receive gifts, earn allowance or earnings from chores or jobs, that “income” can be applied toward the kid’s goals.

Setting & Sharing Goals

Goals can be smart products, long term saving & investing or charitable giving. Kidworth has prebuilt goals identified by our Parents Council, or you can create your own.

One of my friends and I recently went on a vacation to France. We wanted to be able to share our travel experience with friends, relatives, and colleagues, so we maintained a blog while we were there. Several times a day we would post photos and narratives that showcased our adventures.

The trip was great and there were many highlights, but one of the most exciting parts of the day was returning back to our hotel, getting online, and reading comments on our blog from folks at home. I can’t tell you how disappointing it was to see the words, “No New Comments.”

Just Have to Brag!

Everyone knows I am one of the biggest fans of R. L. Young. So with that in mind, I just have to brag on our students and their teachers. All year long, and for that matter, for 4 years I have been tracking reading progress with the use of Accelerated Reader.

In 2008, our school's overall AR comprehension was 79.9%. Since this time, we raised the expectation from an 80% comprehension average to qualify for prizes/trip to a whopping 85%. Our students rose to the challenge and today our school's comprehension average is an impressive 91.1%. This speaks volumes to me and the effort being put forth by students and teachers.

I have a plaque on my office wall that says, "Children learn to read by reading!" The bottom line is the MORE you read the BETTER you read. It all makes sense, but what most folks overlook is the fact that for a child to improve in reading, they MUST practice within their comfort zone. At Young we find this zone (through STAR TESTING), support the progress, and encourage our students to look for books that fit in this range.

Each Friday I run reports to check for the highest comprehension by classroom, top 20 point getters in the school, and a class report for the teachers to check each student's progress. If your child is not reading and testing, they are missing out on a great opportunity to improve comprehension. You could help us rectify this problem.

At the last report running, I was amazed at the number of books our students have tested on this year. One class had over 900 passed tests! Just think what a difference it would make if kids were reading not only at school but at home. Of course, students may only take tests at school, but they can read anywhere! Many first graders will now begin using the AR program and success at this level is the key to future long term strong readers!

So, if you are a parent reading this post, consider these suggestions. Let your child read their AR book to you. Enjoy this special time to snuggle and learn together. Encourage them to take the test to check their comprehension and understanding of what was read. Follow up on the AR website (link is provided on the side of the blog). You can request to join the site and have full assess to see the result of every test your child has taken AND how they scored. In fact, this free program will send you an email letting you know your child tested!

We are so blessed to have a wonderful library, librarian, teachers, assistants, and parents all helping kids discover the great advantages of being a strong reader.

I am proud of all of our students. And I know YOU are, too!

I read the paper almost every day and often see schools featured that have collected for the needy. I am proud to work at a school that emphasizes to think of others throughout the year. Sometimes it may be to donate something, make something, or just say kind words to others. We are creating an environment where people matter.

One of the students wrote in a birthday card to me, "You are always gathering us together". I loved this statement because it is true. We are a strong school academically, socially, and emotionally. I love to look out into the sea of faces.

Young is so blessed to have a beautiful auditorium in which the entire school can fit to celebrate with a sing-a-long, recognize achievement such as honor roll, or have fun with a movie. These gatherings do make us closer.

I often remind the students that when one of us does something great...it makes us all great. I believe this and I think they do, too. I am proud of the giving hearts of our children and their parents. I love the influence my kind, caring teachers have on the students and each other. It truly is....

An annual event at Young is the sing-a-long with students, faculty, staff, and special guests enjoying Christmas music. Dr. Buck and Mrs. Lou Ann Allen shared their musical talents of flute and piano before and during the singing. Mrs. Cari Wilson led the group along with many student helpers.

Ms. Winn suggested an addition of student song leaders and music makers. This was well received by students. Our student duet this year was Mary Wilson and Emaleigh Bates, both sixth graders. They did a wonderful job and touched our hearts with their angelic voices.

A special thanks to Michele Wilson for sharing these pics, Renee Humphrey for making the music batons,and Mrs. Diane for prepping the auditorium for this special event.

"Comfort From the Cold" Project

Our students have an opportunity to participate in the COMFORT FROM THE COLD CAMPAIGN this week. You may find these items right in your closet! We will be collecting new and slightly used blankets, quilts, comforters, and throws to help warm the needy this winter. If you would like to donate, you can have your child place the donation in the box designated in the hallway in the main building.

This is just another way our school is reaching out to the community to think of others. The donated items will be picked up on Monday, Dec. 19th. Thanks for supporting and allowing us to mold and build good will and thoughtfulness among our students.

R. L.Young Elementary School is teaming up with First Family Services to provide Christmas gifts for children in need throughout Talladega County. This organization service children from birth to 12 years of age.

We are hope that everyone will participate in this terrific cause. Through our efforts we hoping to brighten someone’s Christmas AND provide an opportunity to focus on giving, love, gratitude, and helping others.

Anyone may bring new, unwrapped toys to school by December 9th.

New Ethics Law -Gifts for School Employees

You may have read in the paper or heard on the news that there are new Ethic Guidelines for school employees receiving gifts. Although this is true, the suggested types of gifts are not really any different than what they have received in the past.

The following list, while not all inclusive, sets out some types of gifts that are acceptable for school teachers to receive:
1) Fruit baskets, homemade cookies, candy, etc.

2) Christmas ornaments of little intrinsic value

3) Coffee mugs filled with candy of a holiday nature

4) Any item that the teacher may use to assist him/her in performing his or her functions as a teacher, such as notebooks, school supplies, etc.

5) CDs or books of a nominal value, scarves, consumables like lotion or a candle, etc.

The bottom line is that teachers cannot acccept items that have real resale value. Gift cards and cash are not permissible.

Thank you for always being so thoughtful to our teachers and staff. We raise our children to think of others, especially on holidays. This does not have to stop, we just need to be aware of the guidelines.

American Education Week 2011 Kickoff Assembly at R. L. Young

Monday, Nov. 14th was a busy and exciting day for R. L. Young. The school participated in an assembly to kickoff our celebration of American Education Week.

Many special guests joined the school. Talladega City Schools Maintenance Supervisor Wayne Mitchell shared a powerpoint comparing a school in Afghanistan to R. L. Young. He helped children see how blessed we are as a country and a school.

Taylor Gurley, Youth Minister at Bemiston Baptist, college student, and former R. L. Young Alumni reminded students how blessed they are to have the caliber of teachers that they have each year. (He is so right!)

Chris Clevenger reminded the children how awesome READING can be. He is so right!

The program was enjoyed by all. There is something special when we gather together as a school for events such as this because we are making memories that will last a life time.

Accelerated Reader Trophy Winners

Even though our students were eager to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal, this super group earned the AR Trophy with an impressive 99% in comprehension for the week of Nov. 21-22. The were the first group to have the "Dancing Santa" visit their classroom.

Penguin Patch Holiday Shop Coming to R. L. Young

For the first time ever, students will have an opportunity to shop on campus for their family and friends before the holiday season. The Penguin Patch Holiday Shop will open beginning December 5th and remain open until December 9th. A shopping list envelope and letter will be coming home after the Thanksgiving Holidays. All items in the shop are inexpensive (25 cents to $5) and children will be assisted in picking out just the right gifts for their loved ones. Now if they can just keep it a secret..!!!

I am still SO BLESSED!!!!

When recently asked why I am thankful during this Thanksgiving season, I quickly paused for fear that I would knock them down with my huge response. I am a blessed person in all aspects of my life. Although my days are not trouble free, they are so filled with opportunity and blessings, that I choose not to focus on those things that annoy, disturb, or cause me to fret instead of sleep at night.

I preach to the students, faculty, and staff that the best tool one has to grow is to be reflective, so please allow me to share the reasons I feel so thankful this holiday.

First, I am thankful that I have a family that understands that to have passion for my job keeps me fulfilled, creative, and happy.

I am thankful that we live in a country where all children can go to school and learn.

I am thankful that our school is supported by our parents, the community, and a wonderful faculty and staff.

I am thankful that although the folks at the school are different, we are all alike in our beliefs and goals for the students.

I am thankful for an awesome student body. Our children are kind, thoughtful, and considerate of others. Outside visitors frequently share how our students are polite and helpful. The pride they show in the school and in themselves is amazing.

I am thankful to have the opportunity to be on a first name basis with each child that enters our school doors. For Haim Ginott said, "To reach a child's mind, you must first reach his heart. Only when a child feels right, can he think right."

I am thankful that R. L. Young is truly a good place to learn and grow, for we are all evolving even as adults. Every year gets better and better.

I am thankful for my position as principal. For it is with this job that I can witness growth, effort, and changes in children. They may walk out of our doors eventually, but they are forever in our hearts.

We certainly love the main building of our school which was built in 1929. But things with age must be maintained and kept looking good. The fourth graders welcomed Mrs. Millie Chastain today. Mrs. Chastain was trained and certified by The Protocol School of Washington, the leader in etiquette and protocol services. She spoke to us on the importance of Veteran's Day, Flag etiquette, and manners. She also provided snacks and an American flag pin for us all. We salute Mrs. Chastain for her service and dedication to today's young Americans.

First grade at R. L. Young has a bright new face joining them each Friday, Ms. Brenda Joiner. Ms. Joiner is the school's neighbor and is now serving as a reading buddy volunteer. I was curious what the children thought about this nice lady who was willing to volunteer an extra pair of ears to listen to them read.
This is what they had to say:

"She is real nice."

"She has come 3 times. We get to read books."

"She lets everybody read."

"She likes listening to me read."

"She reads to me. I read to her. she helps me with the words."

"She helps me read."

"One time I saw her. We went by her house."

Kind words from first graders. They really like this sweet lady who gives freely of her time to make a difference in the lives of our students, just like her Daddy did. Mr. Joiner served as the crossing guard for many years. The children loved him, too.

Last week's winner of the AR Trophy and Monster visitor was Mrs. Armstrong's 2nd grade class.

This week's winner with an astonishing 97.7 comprehension % was Mrs. French's sixth graders.

Our school's overall comprehension is 90.7%. This speaks highly of our teachers and students who work so hard to improve their reading. "The MORE you read, the BETTER you read."

Urgent message about the 4th Grade Field Trip!

Parents of all 4th Graders:

All fourth graders and chaperones must be at school by 7:30 a.m. The bus will pull out at 7:40 a.m. to allow for extra time needed due to much road construction. Students are to wear their orange shirts and bring a drink.

If you did not receive a school cast call from the office for some reason, you either did not answer or the number provided is not correct. Please send the number you wish our system to call for important messages.

Africa Cards Have Arrived!

This litter of cheetahs caused quite a stir this week as they announced (along with their orangutan friend) the arrival of the second set of collectable animal cards.

Each week, students that have no tardies, checkouts, or absences will receive a card featuring a different animal. The students were also given a plastic sleeve to place their collection. As an added bonus, 9 baby cheetahs will be given away as well as 3 other surprise animals throughout the nine week program.

A BIG thank you to our supportive PTO who chose to purchase these for each student. You continue to help make our school EXTRA special.

Keep up the good attendance and join the animal card collection club this week. It's COOL to be in SCHOOL!

Aniya was chosen as Good Citizen for the month of October. She chose this as a topic for her journal writing. How touching that she chose to share it with me!

Aniya writes: "I can not wait because I am good and I am sitting with the principal.

I can not wait."

Her teacher and I are glad that she is good in the classroom. I am thrilled that she is also unafraid to put her thoughts on paper, because the memories will last forever. It was, indeed, a pleasure to dine with her at the Good Citizen luncheon.

R. L. Young students did a "switch-a-roo" on the lunchroom staff during National School Lunch Week. As these hard working ladies were busy preparing delicious lunches for the many guests fed that week our students showered Mrs. Gaither, Mrs. Harvell, Mrs. Gurley, Mrs. Whitten, and Ms. Morrow with surprises throughout the week.

Notes of appreciation were hung in the lunchroom for all to see.

This past week of October 15th-21st revealed a new winner, Mrs. Thornton's 3rd graders. Winning is not new to this group, they were the first winners to have the trophy and monster for the school year. There is something else very impressive about this bunch of awesome readers. How often does one get a call out of the blue saying someone wants to appreciate your staff? Wow! That is exactly what happened thanks to the generous and thoughtful folks of Wal-Mart.

Winners of the gift cards: Cari Nabors, Joy Bittle, Bridget Belcher, Linda Haynes, Selena Nelson, Valerie Harris, Dani Odom Winn, Kelly Davidson, Wal-Mart Manager Lori Johnson, Employee Pat Simmons, Teresa Brooks, and Rhonda Nunn.

Not only did they bring a delicious freshly baked cake, but Manager Lori Johnson and long time store employee Pat Simmons held a drawing for ten $100 gift cards to be spent for the classrooms.

Most importantly, they made teachers feel special and appreciated. Wal-Mart manager, Mrs. Johnson said teachers spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets each year. I know this is true of the teachers at R. L. Young and throughout the Talladega City School District. Teachers go this extra mile because they care about their students.

White Cane Safety...a special program at R. L. Young!

Visitors to the school often open our minds to consider new ideas and gain important information. This past week third and fourth graders were in the audience of a White Cane Safety Program from AIDB. Five guests affiliated with the campus brought items of interest-guide dog, white cane, braille machine, and a sample of braille to share with the students.

Students were free to ask questions of each speaker and become very comfortable learning about people who were visually challenged. These delightful guests made us laugh and opened our minds to learn more about others. Each student received a card with his/her name typed in braille.

We appreciate AIDB for including us in this informative program! We hope you will come back again next year.
