Support Comes in Strange Packages

Across from our sweet school is Bemiston Baptist Church. The pastor is Kory Burel and the youth minister is Taylor Gurley. You may not recognize them here!

This dynamic duo brings laughter, cheer, and inspiration to children and the adults. We appreciate the Friday afternoon treats, helping to make popcorn bags, warm cookies for staff, helping in the Penguin Patch Holiday Shop, and so many things they do to make us feel loved.

We appreciate them both and the support of our neighboring church. Thanks for everything!

R. L. Young's Book Club

Children have wonderful ideas to make learning fun. Starting a book club was the idea of two 5th graders, Haylee and Anna Belle.
We decided on one of my favorite read-aloud books, Stone Fox.

The story is a touching one and meant to be shared with others. The students took turns being the leader of the discussion. Ms. Lane, the school librarian made it fun by joining the group. The children got to see what a love for books she has. She created a cozy place for us to meet and the classroom teacher, Mrs. Harris allowed students to use computer time to gather.

What comes next? Well, this small group will branch out to create other book clubs through the next couple of months. we will always remember the book we shared, the happy and sad events of the characters, and how we felt as we read the pages. Lots of memories were made and I thoroughly enjoyed the weeks of sharing a great read!

Thanks, girls for bringing such a good idea to me and allowing me to be a part.

No PTO Meeting on Dec. 20

The December PTO meeting has been canceled. The Upper Grade Academy teamed up to combine 5th and 6th in the November program.

The next PTO meeting is scheduled for February 26 at 6 p.m. with first grade performing.

First Family Services Toy Drive 2012

A toy drive could not be possible without the support of good parents that know how giving affects children. When you allow a child an opportunity to think of someone else, it builds his/her character.
I love this project, but I especially love the way children are excited to put what
 they brought under the tree.

I am always amazed, but never surprised at how many toys are piled under the main building hallway. It is a collective effort of students and staff that makes it a success.
A particularly touching moment for me as principal was when a little child asked if he could put this toy (above) under the tree for someone. It was clearly his own, but yet he wanted to give it to someone who had no toys. The kindness displayed by the little boy and children throughout the school will help make Christmas merry for many families. THANKS for the part you played in this project!

A Tragedy in Connecticut

As I heard the horrible news today, my thoughts automatically turned to our sweet little school, R. L. Young. I thought about how I had just made copies of the LOCKDOWN procedures for teachers this week. It brought chills down my spine. Although we practice this drill, the thought of anything happening to our precious children is unimaginable, yet it occurred in this sleepy town in our country today.

My heart hurts for the parents who did not know if their child was ok or not. It is a parent's worse nightmare. So many innocent lives were tarnished or lost by a senseless act. And I cannot imagine what will be the next steps for this school and the people who work and attend there.

I pondered over procedures we use every day to ensure safety at our school. Sometimes we get a few grumbles when folks have to sign in to enter the school. But I love that we have a computer system that lets us know who is in our building. I like that teachers and custodians check to see that everyone that walks through the halls has a sign in sticker on their clothing.

I know the parents of our students are holding their little ones a bit tighter tonight and saying a prayer that they are safely tucked in their beds. We love them, too. May the Connecticut families find comfort and peace in the grueling days ahead, especially with the coming of the Christmas Season.

75 POINT Donut Party with the Principal...Yum, Yum!

Take a look at that yummy chocolate-covered donut Ethan is enjoying. He is one of 11 who has earned the treat by reading and taking comprehension tests.
Here is the rest of the gang who read and earned 75 points. Of course, they also had to have a comprehension % of 85.

Congratulations to Carson G., Tommy W., Ethan N., Makhail S., Patrick R.,
Alex C., Charisma McK., Samantha L., Carolyn H., Jake C., and Logan C.!

They are having fun and cutting loose now, but watch out. This group of leaders is making plans to earn more prizes and rewards. Plus, the practice makes them stronger readers, our ultimate goal in using the Accelerated Reader Program.

"Comfort From the Cold" Project

December 3, 2012
Dear Parents,
Our students have an opportunity to participate in the COMFORT FROM THE COLD CAMPAIGN this upcoming week. You may find these items right in your closet! We will be collecting new and slightly used blankets, quilts, comforters, and throws to help warm the needy this winter. If you would like to donate, you can have your child place the donation in the box designated in the hallway in the main building.

This is just another way our school is reaching out to the community to think of others. The donated items will be picked up before the Christmas Holidays. Thanks for supporting and allowing us to mold and build good will and thoughtfulness among our students.

Sincerely,

Pattie Thomas
Proud Principal of R. L. Young

PEACE, LOVE, And the 70's with R. L. Young's Upper Grade Academy

Students in grades 5 and 6 sang some cool songs, but more importantly, they learned (and shared with the students) about an era very different than the world they live in today.

Everyone designed their own special peace sign shirt for the program.
Kelton is sporting a cool look, love those glasses! A special thanks to Jill Peters and Hope B. Allen
for their assistance with the shirts and decorating for the program.

Special parts were assigned and all students were involved in making this a super presentation.

UGA teachers Mrs. Nelson, Mrs. Harris, and Mrs. French showed off their talents!

Awesome Job, UGA!
