This week's star student is a great leader to everyone around her. She is a hard worker and demonstrates great character traits. She has a kind heart and always treats everybody equally. Often there are times where she doesn't say many words but when she does speak, she speaks with honesty. You can always depend on her to do the right thing in every situation. This week's star student is an all around awesome student. Great job Samantha L. and keep up the great work!

Letter to all R. L. Young 2012-13 Ambassadors
Dear Madison, Kristen, Diamond, Kaley, Julie Anne, Shayla, Jessica, Tripp, Jaylin, Patrick, Marlee, Tommy, Victoria, and Gracie,
Thank you for the service you provided this year. You made our school so much better. We appreciate all of those days of running the school store, cleaning around the school, helping teachers, providing tours for new students, and just being an awesome group in which to work.
I loved your willingness to do anything, positive attitudes and sharp abilities to notice when something needed to be done. Your love of our school was apparent in the way you embraced what being an Ambassador means. I enjoyed getting to know each of you. Great ideas and great kids...that is what we had this year. You should be proud that you were able to handle your school work, behavior, after school activities, and serve in this leadership role, too.
We're going to miss you! When you apply for college, be sure to include your year of service for R. L. Young. You will all go far in life. Come visit!
Sincerely,
Pattie Thomas
Proud Principal of R. L. Young

1. Kindergarten graduation is on May 20 at 9 a.m. Sixth grade graduation is on May 21 at 9 a.m.
2.School will dismiss on Thursday, May 23 at 12:30 p.m., NOT 1:00 p.m. as our sign says. The buses will pick up a little earlier so please be there to intercept your child(ren).
3. Stamps and self-addressed envelopes have been collected since early May. Make sure your child has turned in the necessary things to receive their report card in the mail.
4. Any debt owed to the school (missing text books, candy money, library books, or lunch money) will result in your child's report card being held at the office. Class roles will be developed this summer and any child who owes the school will not be placed in a class until it is paid.
5. There will be 2 AWARDS DAY sessions on MAY 22nd to allow everyone to be more comfortable. First and second grade will be at 9 a.m. and third through fifth will be at 10:00 a.m.- 11:30 a.m. Guests should be seated at the back to allow our students to be seated closest to the front. This has been a wonderful school year. We have had the pleasure of seeing your child(ren) learn and grow, not only in knowledge, but in maturity and friendships! Stay close to the BLOG for Open House information.

How Does R. L. Young Reward the TOP SELLER...
Make her PRINCIPAL OF THE DAY! Read below Alyssa Lee's rendition of a very busy day at R. L. Young:
She did a wonderful job. A very wise young lady who didn't miss a beat with every task thrown her way! I am thinking she has "educator" in her future because she is such a natural! The school thanks Alyssa Lee L. for her efforts to help the school raise funds!
Me Being Principal of the Day!
Today I was principal. It was fun! First I went to my classroom. Mrs. Lamberth said, "Right away when you get unpacked go to Mrs. Thomas' office". so I got unpacked and went to her office. I got ready and we said the pledge. Then I was on! I was so nervous. So I said the morning announcements and I got a lot of compliments. After that I stayed in Mrs. Thomas' office. I went to get my work from class. I worked on my work while Mrs. Thomas talked. I finished my work and we did some things for her like getting all of the Good Citizen certificates ready for the luncheon. We set up the Hardwork Cafe for the Good Citizens. I ate with the Good Citizens. K-3 was first and then it was 4-6.
After the luncheon I talked to a student about their behavior. Then we went to talk to Coach about something that happened yesterday. After that I made a surprize phonecall to my mom. I talked at the Talent Show before it started. I reminded students not to judge the contestants.
My day finished with the making of the afternoon announcements. Then I went home. And that's my day!

AR Reading and YUMMY Donuts with the Principal
R. L. Young wants our students to enjoy reading. We also want young readers to comprehend what they read. So with a program called Accelerated Reader, we achieve both. Children choose books according to their interest and independent reading ability. After reading each book, they take a quick quiz to determine if they understand what was read. There is INSTANT feedback for the child with a score and points. The beauty of this program is that it supports what the teacher is doing in the classroom. As children learn to read, they can apply reading strategies being taught. This applying of skills increases their success, as practice does to playing a sport.
The scores and points are recorded and reports can be printed for parents and teachers.
The prize we have in place for reaching 75 points is a DONUT PARTY with the Principal. The pictures below feature students from party #3 (our largest party ever). We hope they enjoyed their donuts, but more importantly we know they are progressing in their ability to read and comprehend.
*A special thanks to our wonderful PTO for supplying the $ for OMG Donuts and all AR prizes!

Talladega City School Foundation Dinner
R. L. Young's Coach Stephens, along with Salter School's Coach Darby and Zora Ellis' Coach Ward served as presenters at the recent Foundation Dinner on May 9th. Their topic was the schools' archery programs. Also featured was the top shooter from each school. Charisma McKinney represented Young and gave an impressive live demonstration. Among the night's grant winners was our very own fourth grade teacher Roxanne Lamberth. She was the only candidate to receive 2 grant awards.
Congratulations to all of these folks...YOU make R. L. Young look so GOOD! We are proud of you!
Coach Stephens takes takes the podium.
Charisma is in the middle of the boys!
Mrs. Lamberth
