IMPORTANT INFO FOR INCOMING Sixth Graders!
A new state requirement applies to adolescents. All students entering the sixth grade must have a tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccination if they are 11 years old or older.
***If you have a child moving to the sixth grade, please make sure they have this shot as soon as they turn 11 years old. This will be closely monitored by the school to protect everyone. The school must receive an updated blue slip showing that this shot was given.
The new certificates of immunization will differ from those tetanus shots traditionally required before high school to include pertussis vaccines.
In a press release, ADPH’s Immunization Department director Winkler Sims said, “Pertussis cases have increased in Alabama, and one of the age groups with the highest rates nationally is the adolescent group. Having the requirement for the sixth grade will allow schools to more easily track expiration dates on certificates and so help identify who needs to be vaccinated.”
The Tdap vaccine is to protect the students and prevent the disease from spreading to family members and other students.

Students turn 11 in the fifth grade. Do they need to get the shot after their birthday or wait?
