READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK 2011

This year's theme for READ ACROSS AMERICA was Be a Champion....Read! R. L. Young promotes reading daily, but with the help of Roxanne Lamberth and Cathy Thornton, we had something special every day.
Mrs. Lane, R. L. Young's librarian set up a book display and encouraged tons of reading with her door display!
Judge Bo Hollingsworth was a featured guest sharing the book Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Seuss. Not only did he do a great job reading, he shared about his experience as a judge. Students took time to reflect on his presentation in their journals. Read some excerpts below:
I learned that Judge Hollingsworth started working in 1979. He was been a judge for 7 years. When he first started he made $112,000. I also learned that he knows how to read and he has sentenced over 100 people to jail in 2 months. Jay Patterson

I learned that you can choose what you do. I also learned what he does for a living. I found interesting where he has been and what he likes to do. He is also a good reader. He taught us what is the wrong way and the right way. He is a nice guy and deals with situations fairly.  Cason Hadley

What did I learn from Judge Hollingsworth? Well, Judge Hollingsworth is only a judge for Talladega County. He will put more than 240 people in prison in 2011. He is in the judical branch. He doesn't work for the police and firefighters. Mr. Hollingsworth is a VERY serious man. He is a judge. He works in the big, tall building beside the U.S. Post Office. Alayna Pody

I learned that if you dream big you can do well. Only dreaming isn't gonna help you a whole lot. You actually have to work at it. Reach toward your goal and succeed. KeShawn Lawler

What I learned from Judge Hollingsworth is to follow your dreams no matter what. There was lots of important things that he said. He talked about his job. He makes all kinds of money and so I want to see his house.  Mary Wilson

Judge Hollingsworth said that the past is behind me and the future is ahead of me. He said clear your mind and you can have a clean start.  Kelton Seals

Tom Wofford, Talladega Ritz Theater Director, joined the K - 2 students to share one of his favorites....Horton Hatches an Egg. The message in this book is "Say what you mean and mean what you say"! With his animated, fun-loving spirit he was a natural in front of the students.

Principal Pattie Thomas and Reading Coach Rhonda Nunn partnered up to share GREEN EGGS AND HAM during the Honor Roll Assembly. Students should see good reading modeled and know that a great book is even better when shared with a friend!

Sixth Grade Ambassadors joined in to help celebrate READ ACROSS AMERICA by presenting Dr. Seuss facts during honor roll Assembly. Enjoy this video of what they discovered.

Thanks to all of the teachers and staff who participated to make this week one of celebration about reading and the fun that books can bring. Our school also appreciates the parents who support us in these extra activities. We are making memories that will last a lifetime!
