The final AR Trophy Winner for the year was Mrs. Armstrong's class. Her students have won the trophy 13 times this year. Mrs. Armstrong serves as the AR Committee Chairman. She has not only worked hard to promote AR in her classroom, but throughout the school.
All of our teachers know that children become better readers when they have plenty of time to practice reading with material that is on their CURRENT LEVEL. Often times the textbooks and reading material may be difficult for the weaker readers. But when they participate in AR and reading practice with books on their level, they improve and become stronger readers.
The higher the grade the deeper the curriculum and it is more difficult for teachers to provide this "free" reading time. This is where our parents come in. Encouraging children to read before bedtime or in the car provides extra time. Also, making sure they have something to read if they come to the lunchroom before school helps.
This trophy-winning class has lots of advice for other classes on how to win the trophy. I enjoyed interviewing 2nd graders LaQuez W., Kaitlyn S., Chloe D., Monterio R., Ally T., and Emily G.
Check out these very wise tips:
Read the book several times and if you aren't sure, read it again.
Take the book home, read with a partner, the teacher, or even the principal.
Take your time.
Read the test questions a few times.
Get a book in your range.
Even if you get a chapter book, read at home.
Make sure you are ready to test on the book.
Choose your answer carefully and don't just pick one.
Make sure you know all of the words. Sound them out or ask someone.
It is OK to make 80% sometimes. Just keep trying.
Try to take at least one test a week.
Make sure you know the book.
Don't fake it. Make sure you have really read they book and aren't guessing at the answers.
Keep testing. Ask yourself..."Are you sure you are ready?"
Never give up!
Wonderful advice from some young readers. Congrats to the class and teacher!
