The R. L .Young Picnic Place is Almost Ready!

You can almost feel the excitement building as the new picnic tables are being assembled and anchored in their new home. Tables were purchased by the general fund to reward and motivate students who work as a class team!

We appreciate the hard work of Mr. Jemison and parent Todd Haney. The weather is warming up and I am curious to see which group dines outside first.

Parents, Please Read

Parents,
Please take a moment to read this article written about a 5th grader at Graham Elementary.  Our students are very dear to all of us. We must be tuned into their needs, thoughts, and emotions. It is tough being a kid in today's world. They are exposed to and worry about many things we did not even think about as children. My thoughts are with this family as they cope with this horrific tragedy.

ARMT/SAT TESTING SCHEDULE THIS WEEK!

Parents,
It is very important that your child be on time and present each day of testing. Children do better when they test with their classmates. All portions of the test must be completed by Friday, April 2. The teachers and students have worked hard to prepare. Every student's scores are important for us to see their growth for the year. They will do wonderful!!

The state measures adequate yearly progress by the results of the ARMT and SAT tests. R. L. Young has already met the attendance goal for 2010. Now we need to show our students' academic achievements. Please encourage your child to do his/her best. It is important that your child has something for breakfast, especially on Wednesday and Thursday, our longest testing days.
Thank you for your support!

Students in grades 3-6 will follow this schedule:

MONDAY, March 29, 2010 ARMT Reading

TUESDAY, March 30, 2010 ARMT Math

WEDNESDAY, March 31, 2010 SAT Reading Vocabulary and
Comprehension

THURSDAY, April 1, 2010 SAT Math Problem Solving
/Procedures and OLSAT

FRIDAY: April 2, 2010 MAKE UP DAY FOR ANY MISSED PORTIONS OF THE TEST

In the fall when school begins, students will be recognized in a special ceremony for their achievement during testing.

Y.E.S. 2010 Testing Team Slideshow

I wanted to share the powerpoint we used at our Testing Pep Rally. As you view it you may notice that there are 2 things missing.
1. A video clip from the movie The Final Season.
2. The song "We are all in this together" from High School Musical. It played through the slides at the end showcasing the many fun, magical things we do together at Young.

Good luck, students. You don't really need it because YOU ARE READY!

How will I know if a book has an AR quiz?

How will I know if a book has an AR quiz?

To know which quizzes your school has available, contact your child’s teacher or librarian, as schools may not have purchased all quizzes.
You can also visit the AR BookFinder at arbookfind.com  to conduct a search of all available books with AR quizzes.

How can I help my child find books that are interesting to him/her?
Visit arbookfind.com and click on Advanced Search. By conducting an advanced search, you can generate book lists that contain titles based on the
criteria you enter such as book level, topic, interest level, fiction/nonfiction, etc.

How can I help my child become a better reader?

How can I help my child become a better reader?

As with anything, performance improves with practice. Encourage your child to read at home. Create a culture of reading in your household by reading with your child, starting a home library, visiting your local library or bookstore
on a regular basis, letting your child see you reading, and discussing books
that each of you has read. When reading with your child, stop and
ask questions to be sure your child is comprehending what is read. Reading with your child, no matter what the child’s age, is an important part of developing a good reader, building a lifelong love of reading and learning, and creating a
loving relationship between you and your child.

 Make learning a family affair!
