I LOVE Good Citizen Luncheon! I get to eat with some of the neatest kids ever! They give me great ideas for the school, I learn some new things about what is going on in our classrooms, and they catch me up on the hottest movies, who is winning on the soccer field, and other interesting stuff.

Our school wide focus this year is to honor those who really show respect to themselves, others, and the environment. Your child obviously exhibits these characteristics.
Congrats to you for raising such an awesome child.

Dega Fever at R. L. Young

Talladega High School cheerleaders and players has made several visits to the elementary schools to allow students to purchase "cheer" items for the THS football games. They have also offered a cool incentive to win a FREE football ticket to the home games just by making an A in conduct and "Ace"ing all of their classwork. There are 2 remaining home games left to earn a free ticket.

Thanks, THS for caring about our students, reaching out to include the youngest tiger fans, and for visiting our school.

Pretty DEGA supporters at R. L. Young. Their futures look bright............

9-21-12 PE Star Student of the Week

This week’s star student has a kind heart.  She is very respectful to her environment and to others.  She is a very hard worker and she is always doing her best at everything she does.  She is always helping others in their time of need.  She is a true friend to everyone and she always has a smile on her face.  This week’s star student was an easy choice because she is just that good.  Keep working hard Hayden M. and keep being a great leader.

Reading Made Fun!

Reading should be fun and I am glad it is at R. L. Young. I just happen to be visiting a class of sixth graders and sat in on the reading lesson. The students made it so entertaining with their funny voices and changing of character parts. They could have just read the story at their seats, but this approach made "Show Time" come alive. My hat is off to the teacher for having this activity, for the students who entertained, and to the audience who listened.

AR has STARTED!

Chipper my dog, has discovered a great book. Too bad he can't take an AR test, but your child can if they are in grades 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6. In fact, if your child is not testing, ask them why. AR is a super easy way to improve any child's reading. This program takes an individual approach to helping each child practice reading on his/her own level. They choose the book, read it in their own time frame, and reap the benefit of reading practice, plus cool prizes.

Want to see what your child is doing with AR? Go to this link and click on the parent button. You will see a place to request to be added as a parent. When approved, you can log in and see your child's bookshelf and all of the tests he/she has taken. You can even sign up to receive an email every time your child completes a test and even how they did!
Happy Reading!

Curious about AR?

Curious about the Accelerated Reader Program for students in grades 1st-6th? Click here
to view a powerpoint created by R. L. Young's principal, Pattie Thomas. The more you learn about AR, the better you can encourage YOUR child to participate. This program strengthens a child's ability to comprehend reading material on his/her current level using a book that he/she chooses.

Reading at current level and practicing comprehension strategies will make a student a better reader. Plus, there is no penalty for trying your best. When your child brings home a library book, encourage them to read it to you. Ask questions along the way. This will better prepare them for the computer test. Join AR Home Connect (see link on left side of blog) to receive emails when your child takes an AR test. Then you will be ready to congratulate them at the supper table that night!

"The more you read, the BETTER you read!"

THS Cheerleaders Coming! Thursday, Sept. 6

Parents,
Don't forget that Talladega High School Cheerleaders will be visiting R. L. Young on Thursday to sell THS ribbons, bracelets, tattoos, shakers, and various other items from $.50 to $2.00. They will be going to each classroom. If you send money, please ask your child to keep it in a secure place until time to make a purchase.

Also, the students who last week had an A in conduct AND all A's on their classwork will receive a free ticket to get into the football game at Mary Dumas Stadium on Friday, Sept. 7. A parent must accompany the child and purchase a ticket.

Go, TIGERS!

Jump Rope For Heart 2012

This year we are participating in the American Heart Association's "Jump Rope For Heart."  This is a great program and it teaches our children about ways to stay active and give back to the community. I would like to encourage all students to participate in this fundraiser.  This is a non-profit fundraiser and all money raised will go to the American Heart Association.  Students will begin jumping on Sept. 10-21, 2012 during their PE time. All money that is raised should be turned in no later than Sept. 21, 2012. Students will be given different prizes for the different amounts of money raised. This fundraiser is for a great cause but if you can't participate I understand.  Thank you so much for all that you do for this school and for our community.

8-31-12 PE Star Student of the Week

This week’s star student has been a pleasure to be around.  He is always working so hard to improve, and become the best student and person he can be.  He is always smiling and making others around him smile as well.  Each school year students have a fresh and new start and he is determined to make this year his best ever.  It makes my heart so happy to be able to have him in my class and to see how much he has grown into a great young man. Keep up the great work Kelton S.!
