Beautiful Way to End the Year!

R. L. Young faculty and staff felt mighty special on Friday as we made our walk to Bemiston Baptist Church. We feel very blessed to receive this invitation every year.
The tablescapes were beautiful and all of the food was delicious.

This year, Mrs. Armstrong our school poet, created a very touching poem that captured how we all feel about our special neighbors...

Words of Heart-felt Thanks
Words cannot express the thanks
That is owed to each of you.
We will never be able
To adequately say
"Thanks for all you do."

The prayers you've prayed for R. L. Young
Are felt inside each person's heart.
They empower and shield us
With God's loving care
As each school year we start.

The snacks are delicious and we think "nutritious"
And the supplies are appreciated --much!
The students and staff adore you;
And we just want to tell you:
We love you all so much!

Love,
Administration, Faculty & Staff

Two Students Earn over 500 AR Points

What's the prize for accruing 500 Accelerated Reader Points? How about lunch at a restaurant with the homeroom teacher?

Yes, R. L. Young had not one, but two students earning over 500 points this year.

Alayna Pody lead the way almost every week with the top points. She earned the title of TOP READER OF THE YEAR with a total of 520.9 points. She had lunch at Olive Garden in Oxford with her teacher Mrs. Nelson and Grandmother Linda Hodnett.

Jackson Boyd kept things hopping this year. He earned a total of 519.0 points and earned 2nd place on the Top 20 board. His uncle joined Mrs. French and Jackson for a wonderful meal at Red Lobster in Oxford.

We are proud of both of these students. They are great leaders and helped motivate students all year long. As principal, I was very proud to dine with them and let them know how proud we are of all of their efforts!

2012 Logo Contest Winner Announced!

Every spring R. L. Young holds a LOGO Contest in search of that perfect illustration of the school's longtime motto: R. L. Young....A good place to learn and grow. It is exciting to see what students come up with that demonstrates what these words mean to them.
The first place winner is fifth grader Julie Grissett. Second place winner is Ja'karle Porter Keith, and coming in third place is Victoria Farris. All three young ladies had wonderful designs.
Julie will have her winning design displaced on school t-shirts sold at the beginning of school. Don't forget to place your order at Open House 2012!

Thanks to all students who participated in the Logo Contest and to Ms. Porter for spearheading this event.

2012 Sixth Graders Leave their Mark on R. L. Young

Our wonderful sixth graders will be leaving us soon. Of course, we will all be reminded of this group every time we use our auditorium.
With the help of parent Jana Hadley (one of our favorite people!), our seniors created a mural of individually designed flowers which illustrates the famous R. L. Young motto..."a good place to learn and grow".
This project, located in the auditorium, has transformed it into a spectacular thing. Stop by and take a peek. Thanks, Mrs. Hadley, and congratulations to the wonderful class of 2012!

Happy Mother's Day to All of Our Moms!

R. L. Young students are blessed with terrific moms. How do we know? Well, our students come to school clean. They have their supplies, homework done, and papers signed. The children at Young come to school on time and are absent when they don't feel well. Their moms call the teacher when they are concerned about their child's grades or behavior. They like to come on campus to volunteer or just have lunch with their child.
We are SO blessed!

R. L. Young Archery Team Makes Front Page

Congratulations to the R. L. Young Archery Team for making the front page of the Daily Home today! Great article, Chris Norwood. Also, thanks to George Culver, director at the Ritz for wishing our team well on the Marque Sign on the Square! Our students will do Talladega Proud, no doubt!

Inventor at R. L. Young

I have always bragged that I have the brightest, most talented faculty. Here is an example of why I feel so proud of my faculty:
(Quote from R. L. Young teacher)
In my 16 years of teaching experience, I have seen students struggle with the memorization of multiplication facts.  Math Bands are designed to help students of all levels learn in a fun way.  Applying the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics (3.0A, #4-7), “Math Bands for Multiplication” help students understand the relationship between multiplication and division, apply properties to multiplication, as well as practice fluency in multiplication.   - Math Bands Inventor

This inventor's name is 4th grade teacher, Cari Wilson. Check out the website and video featuring one of our students demonstrating how to use this cool invention.

4-13-12 PE Star Student of the Week

This week’s star student was not only noticed by me, but by a substitute as well.  She has a kind heart and is always willing to do whatever it takes to make others smile.  She has a terrific personality and is very easy to get along with.  Great job, Isabella B. and keep up the good work!
My heart has been humbled; I'm  unable to speak
Because of the cards I was given for Teacher Appreciation Week.
The cards came from my student's hearts
Which clearly sets them far apart
From being "just a child."

My heart has been humbled; I'm unable to speak
Because of the love I've been shown this week.
The content of their hearts have been clearly shown
They are examples to all:  the growing and the grown...
Oh, to be like them, so meek and so mild....The loving heart of a child.

Thanks to all who help to make all teachers feel loved and appreciated - not just this week - all year round!

R. L. Young Teachers Put the COOL in School!

Every day I watch R. L. Young teachers with our students. Their gentleness, kindness, and effort to take each child as far a possible is quite evident. The lesson plans reflect the goals, but it is the human connection that is the most impressive.

So on Day 1 of Teacher Appreciation Week  2012, I salute the faculty and staff of Young. You make a difference in the life of every child on our campus
