Young Writers Need an Audience

From my teaching days in first grade, I remember how important it is for new readers and writers to have an audience. Giving gentle support, motivation, and appreciation for the tremendous effort it takes to read and write, keeps them going. Kid writing should be allowed in grade k and 1st. It allows students to spell phonically (how it sounds). This frees them to focus on getting their thoughts down using words from their own vocabulary.

I was delighted to be the audience for this story from Exzavier R. in first grade. Notice the big smile when he finishes!
Enjoy....
