It is 6 AM on Saturday morning and I just had to get up and tally summer reading logs while enjoying my morning coffee. I have had many anxious readers ask when I would be announcing the results of Summer Reading. Today I will give away some of the suspense!!!!!!!!!!! Students from R.L. Young recorded 335 hours and 28 minutes of reading over summer break. WOW! I am blown away. This added up to 26 students that participated. I can already envision that number will double and even maybe triple next summer. Further break down of the data and I have concluded that 6 first graders, 3 second graders, 9 third graders, 5 fourth graders, 1 fifth grader, and 1 sixth grader accepted the reading challenge. The top three students will be named at the AR Kick Off on September 3rd. I will also give certificates to the 26 students that participated. Our goal was for each student to read 10 hours over the summer, which breaks down to only one hour a week over the break. The top three participants will have McDonald's lunch in the library with Mrs. Taylor and the other 23 participants will be enjoying a popsicle party very soon. I am very proud of the "Leader" Readers at RLY!

Promoting R. L. Young in a Cool Way
Want to promote our school wherever you go? R. L.Young has vehicle decals for only $5. You can purchase a decal for your vehicle which says, "Proud R. L. Young Parent OR Grandparent". These stick right onto your window! They will be available at the MEET AND GREET and every PTO meeting. If you are by the school and want to pick one up, just check with Mrs. Hodnett, the secretary. The next PTO meeting is September 29 with 3rd grade performing. Make plans now to attend.
If you would like to help advertise our school and show your pride, but can't make come by to purchase, just send the money by your child and the decal will be sent home. Just be sure to indicate which decal you are purchasing.

BOXTOPS Welcome at R. L. Young!
Each boxtop equals 10 cents and it adds up quick. Since you have already purchased the product, those purchases can help the school. Just locate and cut the small boxtop off of products. (Not the actual top of the box) Thanks to all who helped us earn the amount below last year.

Summer Reading Program Ends August 10, 2015
Who participated in the summer reading program?
The Parent Instructions from Mrs. Taylor, R. L. Young Librarian:
Students need to log their reading (books, newspaper, magazines, cereal boxes, signs, etc.). Each student who logs 10 hours or more of reading will be rewarded with a Popsicle party in August. I will also recognize my top three readers with a goody bag and provide a McDonald's lunch in the library. If you need a log stop by the school office this summer.
One of my favorite principal quotes is : Children learn to read by reading. Kudos to all parents who helped their child become a stronger reader over the summer.
Turn this log into your classroom teacher.

How Do County Students Get into R. L. Young? Quick Process...
If you know someone who lives in Talladega County who wants a SUPER elementary school for their children...here is the quick process:
*Fill out an out of city form to be approved by the Superintendent. This form can be obtained at the school.
*Once she approves, complete paperwork for R. L. Young.
#Must have proof of residency in the county (power bill,
water bill, gas bill).
#If you are a renter, your lease agreement will be accepted.
#If you live with someone, a form obtained from the school
may be presented after it has been notarized.
We would be HAPPY to have your child!
A Few Changes at R. L. Young this YEAR!
(Warning- Long Post)
Many folks outside of the school arena don't really understand about teaching units earned at schools. The first day after Labor Day begins what we call the TWENTY DAY COUNT. This year it falls on September 8 through October 5. During this time the State takes a close look at the number of students each school has enrolled. This window of 20 days is a BIG DEAL! It determines the number of teachers you will earn for NEXT year.
Due to a smaller than usual number of students in the fifth grade, our school lost a teaching unit. Ms. Cook served so well by finishing up for retiring first grade teacher, Mrs. Joy Bittle. I am happy that she will still be serving in the District as an asset to Houston Elementary. They are so lucky!
What does this mean for you? I have had to make the following changes:
Mrs. Roxanne Lamberth will be teaching first grade. Her students will be those on Ms.Cook's roll (posted on the doors).
Mrs. Nelson will be a 6th grade homeroom teacher. She now has Mrs. Lamberth's roll.
Mrs. Harris will have the pleasure of 23 awesome 5th graders.
The UGA (Upper Grade Academy is still firmly in place). Student will rotate to 3 classes, instead of the original 4.
* the rolls have been fixed and posted for you to see.
Without the help and cooperation of my SUPER staff, fixing this problem would not have been so easy. But there is nothing R. L. Young can't handle. And I love every staff member here!
Some things to know:
Be sure to have your child present during the 20 day count
Please don't plan a Labor Day Trip and miss during this time.
We have so much to offer and will happily serve every child to be best of our abilities. Happy School Year to all!
