R.L. Young had a very exciting week as we kicked off another year of Accelerated Reader. This year's theme is READING IN PARADISE! Fourteen students helped their classmates gear up for a year filled with prizes, fun, and reading achievement.
The prizes are based on points earned AND maintaining an average of 85% or higher in comprehension.
The parade was led by last year's students who appeared on the TOP 20 Board (display board in the main building used to showcase the top point earners each week).
PRIZE PARADE...
10 POINTS...a trip to Mrs. Beard's treasure box.
25 POINTS...A snack bag filled with drink, chips, and candy bar.
50 POINTS... receive a debit card with redeemable items such as a Hardwork Cafe pass, 10 bonus points...
75 POINTS... earns a CUSTOM PIZZA PARTY with the PRINCIPAL.
NOTICE THE PIZZA BOX IS EMPTY......LANDRY KNOWS ALL ABOUT CUSTOM PIZZA!
100 POINTS earners will receive a medal and recognition at an Honor Roll Assembly. This will also qualify 5th and 6th grade for the AR Field Trip at the end of the year. Each grade level has point levels to reach to earn the trip...1st grade (40), 2nd grade (65), 3rd grade (75), 4th grade (85), and 5th/6th (100).
150 POINTS... enjoy a cool, refreshing drink in a keepsake cup with special straw during LUNCH.
200 POINTS... students will receive a READING IN PARADISE t-shirt.
The shirt design has not yet been revealed!
300 POINTS...a Wal-Mart $20 gift card is awarded!
400 POINTS...earn a pass for 2 movie tickets, plus cash for snacks!
500 POINTS... eat at a restaurant of student's choice with principal and teacher!
600 POINTS...A MYSTERY BOX!
As a special feature of the 2013 AR Kickoff, 3 students were asked to encourage students to be
successful with the AR program.
SIR MIX A.R. LOT (alias Ethan N.) shared a powerful rap about using integrity (school's character focus this year) during testing. His tips helped remind students that the AR Code of Conduct must be followed.
Inspector AR (alias Carolyn H.) shared secrets of her AR success about finding the right book, preparing for tests, and watching that AR comprehension percentage.
TOP AR student, Jake C. encouraged the student body to rise to the challenge to beat his impressive point level from last year and join him on the TOP 20 Board this year!
R. L. YOUNG has discovered that A.R. is a super supplement to our reading program and allows students to practice comprehension on their own individual reading levels. Parents are encouraged to take an active part in their child's reading journey by listening to them read, inquiring about the tests that were taken, and providing reading materials at home. It is scientifically proven, the more kids read, the BETTER they read.
