AR 75 POINT PIZZA Party #3

Last Friday 18 students gathered in the conference room at R. L. Young to celebrate reaching a milestone (75 points) with Accelerated Reader. AR (as we call it) is a unique program that supplies comprehension tests for thousands of books. Our district supplies the Enterprise Version which is web based. Students choose books on their individual reading level and after reading, test their understanding of the book by taking a test on the computer. The test gives instant feedback and motivates children to do well on the next book. The teacher's role is to monitor the selection of books, encourage, and offer assistance if they are not progressing.

As principal, I want to encourage and motivate readers, too. When at least 12 students have signed the PARTY BOARD, I decorate, order pizza, and supply the drinks/ sweets. Sometimes a teacher will offer to bake something for the party (Thank you, Mrs. Armstrong). I take pictures, we sign a thank you card for our donations to the party, and I ask them for their best reading tips. Even though the parties are a lot of work, I look forward to an opportunity to connect to the students.

I hope you will encourage your child to participate in the Accelerated Reader Program. We have seen tremendous gains in the area of reading this year.

First graders need 40 points and 85% in comprehension to attend the field trip. B all first graders go on a trip to celebrate becoming a reader. This way they don't miss out.

Second graders need 75 points and grades 3-6 must reach 100. Of course, they have all year to reach this goal.
