TOP DOGS at R. L. Young

Front row: Ethan N., Joshua K., Latasia E., Patrick R.

Riley K., and Mary W.
Take a look at these students standing under the TOP DOG board in the hall of the main building. They are a part of a group of great attendance achievers. I am happy to report that we had 14 PERFECT ATTENDANCE for the year and 6 EXEMPLARY ATTENDANCE recipients. I gathered as many of these students as I could to pick their brains about the attendance issue, how they made it, their best tips, and why it is important to come every day.

Tips for having PERFECT ATTENDANCE (according to students):

  • Set a goal to be TOP DOG. (No tardies, no checkouts, and no absences)
  • Don't get sick.
  • Stay healthy, get active, and hydrated. (yes, one of these interviewees, said hydrated. Young kids are SO smart!)
  • When you wake up, eat breakfast.
  • Wake up a couple of minutes early. And leave early so you won't be late.
  • Come to school and stay committed.

I think one of the secrets to our wonderful attendance rate throughout the year is the recognition of perfect attendance EACH six weeks, not just at the end of the year. Even adults need recognition at frequent intervals. Of course, faculty and staff are recognized, too at each Honor Roll Assembly.

One of my favorite quotes from the student interviews came from Patrick Royster. He said, "I came to school and stayed committed". That is the whole key, commitment.
R. L. Young faculty and staff members are committed to providing the best education and environment around. We are happy to recognize our students for not only their academic achievements, but for good behavior, and attendance.

I would be amiss if I did not give a "Shout Out" to the parents of this group. Children at this level do not drive. Someone had to get them up, bring them to school, and help them make this an achievable goal. Thank you, parents!!!

It will be interesting to see if we can beat the record of 14 Top Dogs for the Year. Good luck everyone!
